Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Lavelle School for the Blind has an opening for an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist. The O&M Specialist is responsible for teaching students who are blind/visually impaired and with multiple disabilities to travel as independently, safely, and efficiently as possible in any environment. They provide direct instruction that includes classroom orientation, school and neighborhood travel, cane techniques, travel options and experiences, transition and technology when appropriate. The O&M Specialist teaches travel skills; plans and provides individualized O&M programs while positively motivating students to develop appropriate skills, attitudes, and knowledge; utilizes a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to students’ abilities; and creates a safe and orderly learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction and consultation in O&M to students who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities
  • Prepare Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and reports, evaluating and monitoring student progress, use IEP Direct to code quarterly progress
  • Provide instruction individually, on a 1:1 basis, consulting with classroom staff to integrate orientation and mobility goals into classroom activities
  • Modify instructional materials, techniques and assessments appropriate for the ages and skill level of students
  • Application of current techniques in the teaching of O & M skills and the ability to apply them to students with visual impairments and students with disabilities 3-21 years of age
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Candidate profile

— Current O&M certification by ACVREP (COMS) or National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC)
— Experience working in a school/pediatric setting with students with special needs including students with blindness/visual impairment and multiple disabilities
